Is there an agent to install on Windows and macOS to automatically inventory systems?

Currently Reftab has an agent for Windows only and is available only to Business plan subscriptions.

Log into your Reftab account and click “Settings” > “Agent“. You will see instructions on how to both download and install the agent.

The agent will maintain a connection  to your Reftab account and automatically create assets and can populate chosen data such as: “hostname”, “geolocation” (if enabled on the device), “free storage space”, “model”, “User Principal Name” and more.

It is suggested that if you have MS Intune or Jamf, to setup those integrations with Reftab instead of using the agent. If you use the agent and Reftab’s Intune or Jamf integration, duplicate assets will be created in Reftab.

Caveats to keep in mind when using the agent:

PLEASE READ
1) If a computer is already in Reftab as an asset, then the agent is installed on that same physical computer, the Agent will not find the existing asset in Reftab and sync to it. It will create a new asset in Reftab. This is because:

  • When installing the agent, there is no prompt to supply an asset ID.
  • Agent’s create an asset in Reftab using the guid of the computer as the asset ID, and save the ‘guid’ value to a field on the asset level. The guid is then used for future connections between Reftab and the agent.

2) After the asset is created, you can edit the asset, including change the asset’s ID. The agent will still maintain a connection. The agent will continue to use the guid that is stored on the field level of the asset as the unique identifier. DO NOT MODIFY THE GUID on the Reftab asset. A new asset will be created if the guid is not found in your Reftab account on any existing assets.

3) The agent cannot check out assets to users.

The agent is not a network discovery tool. Unfortunately, at this time Reftab does not offer a network discovery tool. However, we do have an open API that you can use to work with other applications to gather data: Click here to view API documentation
